Wearing ‘9-5’ like a badge

Harvard Business Review once called work-life balance “at best an elusive ideal, and at worst, a complete myth.”

Today, most people believe the latter. But in an age when rarely anyone stops working ever, Headspace™ makes sure that clients know there’s ‘office’ time and ‘other’ time. Our ‘other’ time is off limits. Why isn’t yours?

Our ‘other’ time is off limits.
Why isn’t yours?

People stuck in the routine of the never-ending workday share similar traits. Many are ambitious, neurotic workers with a penchant for perfection. They don’t sleep well. If they work in an office, they’re consumed by career-ladder competition. If they freelance, the thought of a missed opportunity makes them sick.

Here’s the trouble: today’s professional culture still rewards long hours over efficiency.

Technology is supposed to make work easier. Instead, the traditional ‘nine to five’ has devolved into the stuff of legend. Text and email make it impossible to unplug. We force ourselves to be accessible to clients and bosses for job security (among other reasons).

But won’t there always be more work? Another chance to brownnose?

Like the criminal interrogated to the point of exhaustion, the marathon worker can’t possibly produce an authentic product. Smart business practice means 8 hours should be policy, not suggestion. Cutting back on workday distraction helps. But until that’s doable, just remind yourself to take a breather.

Yours,
Team Headspace™
